Bay Search & Rescue

Cartmel - Sheepy Village Trail helped raise vital funds needed by the charity Bay Search & Rescue, whose invaluable services were heavily called upon during the recent floods.

To date, we have raised £11,000 for the charity and the barometer is still rising.

Supporting the Charity

Bay Search & Rescue is a volunteer team with specialist training, local knowledge and unique dedicated all-terrain amphibious rescue vehicles providing assististance to Cumbria Fire & Rescue, H.M. Coastguard, The Police, Mountain Rescue Teams and Ambulance Service on and around the ‘unique’ Morecambe Bay and South Lake District Area.

During the floods the team and their all-terrain vehicles were deployed to Cockermouth, where they worked round the clock evacuating residents, including a medical emergency case by stretcher, and ferrying in bridge surveyors and engineers. They also recovered dozens of computers holding vital medical records for a large proportion of Cockermouth residents from the flooded medical centre.

Back in Morecambe Bay the team have had little chance for a rest after all the recent heavy snow across Cumbria. A Hagglund and its crew worked in and around the Grange over Sands area transporting people around and helping recover cars. The Landrover Ambulance and crew covered the Milnthorpe area, where it assisted a stranded Ambulance and helped transfer an elderly lady by stretcher from her home so she could be transported to Lancaster Royal Infirmary.

These few examples show just how vitally important the services are that Bay Search & Rescue provide. Heaven forbid there should be another tragedy of the magnitude suffered by the Morecambe Bay cocklers, it is reassuring to know there is a dedicated team of volunteers at the ready to look after the safety of others.

Bay Search & Rescue are about to launch what is believed to the first purpose designed Search and Rescue specification airboat to be deployed in Britain. This unique and revolutionary craft will be a great asset to further aid the work they do on the treacherous Morecambe Bay. It will also ultimately be available for deployment for flood rescue work throughout the Lake District and North Lancashire.
